Are post offices open on Saturdays and Sundays?

Quick Answer

Most post office retail lobbies are open Saturday, typically for a shorter window than weekdays, and closed to the public on Sunday. Mail delivery itself still runs as normal on Saturdays; only the retail counter's hours change, and they vary a lot by individual location.

Typical weekend pattern

Saturday

Most retail lobbies are open, often for shorter hours ending by early afternoon

Sunday

Nearly all retail lobbies are closed; Priority Mail Express is the exception

Saturday hours

Most post office retail lobbies are open on Saturday, though typically for a shorter window than weekdays: commonly a morning-only schedule ending around noon or early afternoon. Some smaller contract postal units and village post offices keep different Saturday hours entirely, or close for the weekend. Holidays add another wrinkle on top of the usual weekend pattern. See this site's guide to Post Office Holiday Schedule for which days close entirely.

Saturday delivery still runs

This shorter Saturday window doesn't affect delivery to your home or business: letter carriers still run their normal routes on Saturdays just like any weekday. What changes is when the building itself is staffed for counter transactions like buying stamps, mailing packages, or picking up certified mail.

Self-service kiosks and PO Box access

Some post offices keep a Self-Service Kiosk in the lobby that stays accessible longer than the retail counter, letting you buy postage or drop off pre-paid packages without waiting for staffed hours (worth checking for on a Saturday afternoon or before Monday morning). Not every location has one, and PO Box access is usually on its own schedule too, separate from retail hours.

Sunday

Sunday retail service is rare. The vast majority of post offices are closed to the public on Sundays, and regular mail delivery doesn't run; the main exception is Priority Mail Express, which USPS delivers seven days a week, including Sundays, in many areas.

Because Saturday and Sunday hours vary so much by individual location, the retail hours listed on this site's location pages are the most reliable way to confirm before a weekend trip, not a nationwide rule of thumb.
